FBE Vs. DBE in T.H. Analysis

Post by Georgia »

Hi,
Is it true that FBE cannot contribute the mass assigned to it toward a time history analysis?! I heard it from someone who said that although DBE has the ability to involve its mass (the mass you have assigned to it using "element mass") during analyses, FBE does not have the same power, and if you want to use FBE, you have to assign mass to your model using "nodal mass". Please somebody advise. Thanks a lot.

Both of these elements in OpenSees take a mass/length parameter "rho" from which a lumped mass matrix is created (see the documentation, don't rely on hearsay). Or you can use nodal mass and obtain the same result.
