How does opensees consider the location of plastic centroid?

How does opensees consider the change of the location of plastic centroid during analysis for displacement based elements using fiber sections? Since the element rigidity matrix is based on the rule that any moment increment does not produce axial force, using a fixed centroid axis wont be appropriate. Actually if fixed centroid is used it will be a macro element with a different type of rigidity matrix. Or am I wrong? A little explanation will be appreciated. Thank you very much.
