suggestion on use of earthquake components

Hi guys,

I am working on analyzing a nonlinear behavior of bridge under seismic event. Most of the papers are using just the horizontal component of earthquake. But I tried to use both horizontal and vertical component of earthquake. I hope I am not making the analysis too complicated.

If anyone has idea please suggest me, if it is better to use both the components of earthquake or just horizontal?

it's not gonna hurt to include them and does not take a lot of effort to do so. if you are a student why not do both and see for yourself

basically for near-field motions the vertical can be significant and should be included, otherwise for short to mid-span bridges it is typically ignored.

Thank you so much for sharing your idea. I found out that it has a significant effect on axial force and moment demands.

However I think I am making my project too complicated by adding the vertical component.
