How to model a frame-shear wall structure in 3D?

Post by lpyhit »

Dear
As i know, we can use dipcolumnbeamInt element or nonlinearColumnBeam with shear material section aggregator. However, they are all two-nodes element, and in structure there are four nodes connecting one shear wall.
How to model a shear wall in 3D?
1.Shell element? How to relize it? Have a simple example?
or
2.How to deal with the question about the node number? How to deal with two-nodes nonlinear element to make it connect to 4 node?

I hope there may be some examples, thank you!

Shell elements would provide the most accurate results. This is a very hot topic and there are many researchers trying to come up with the ways of accurate modeling of shear walls. Check out presentations 9 and 10 from OpenSees days - Day 1: http://opensees.berkeley.edu/wiki/index ... esDays2012. This will give you some info on that. They also had papers regarding this issue in the World Conference 2012 (15WCEE).

thanks vesna
If I want to simulate shear wall using shellMITC4 element, how to choose nDMaterial.
Which nDMaterial can be used for Concrete and which for Steel.

For steel you can use J2 plasticity material. For concrete we will soon have Damage2p model: http://opensees.berkeley.edu/wiki/index.php/Damage2p.

You mean I may simulate shear wall using layered shell? I would try it, thank you vesna,.

I tried to simulate shear wall using damage2p material, but it does not work. J2 plasticity can work well. Can you give me an example to simulate shear wall using damage2P? Thank you vesna

Damage2P is not in the source code yet. Developers want to write few papers before they release it. I gave you the link so you know what is coming up.

Is there any means by which we can get it now and when will it be released ?

Thanks

dear vesna, in the "OpenSees Change Log for Version 2.4.0" number4 indicates that A Concrete Damage Model for 3d and plane stress problems. do this means all our users can use the Damage2p?
look forward to your definite answer, best wishes!

Could I simulate shear wall using shell element with other material, such as PlateStress Material? How to use other material to simulate shear wall? Could you give some example for this? Thank you vesna

Yes, you could use other materials but the question is how accurate you want to be. I do not have examples of shear walls.

I want to simulate shear walls using Plane Stress Concrete Material, but it always didn't work. Are there some examples about shell element using this material or others? I couldn't find one in the webpage of OpenSees.

In the new version 2.4.2, a new shear wall model, multi-layer shell element, has been developed and implemented in OpenSees.
1)The detailed informations and some examples can be found on this website:
http://www.luxinzheng.net/download/Open ... enSEES.htm
we hope this will help you reproducing our research and doing your own
2)Shear wall is discretized into several layers in the transverse derection, each layer is simulated with nDMaterial. You can use the materials we developed, or you can use some other nDMaterials such as elastic isotropic/orthotropic material, J2 material and so on. I have conducted some tests, they all performed well. So you can try it.

Dear xiell,
Thank you very much for your introduction new shear wall model. I've tried to use your model. I'm modeling a 10 storey RCC framed building with shear wall in some sections. I'm wondering that what should be the maximum size to descritize the wall element by your multi-layer shell element. I use the 4 nodes at the section of beam & columns, but it doesn't work.

Thanx in advance again..
