a win32 GUI for Opensees?

Post by shisha »

Dear All,

I am just wondering how many of us using OS presently (and will probably use it for the rest of our lives) really miss a graphical user interface (something like SAP and Patran). As a two year old user of the program I feel a GUI will make life easier trying to use OS. Though there is OSP I feel it is unreliable and without much facilities.

I am starting to consider investing time in making an "open" windows based GUI using VC++ and OpenGL (may be use some of the classes that OS itself provides for the graphics). I just want a feed back as to how many of you will regard it as being of any value..

Please let me know by replying to this post,
shisha.

Hi,

I definitely agree with the need for a GUI. Surely we need a GUI to carry out 3-D FEA such as soil modeling. Since this is something that I'll be working on, I would like to know how people who currently use Opensees for soil-structure problems generate the geometry and the finite element mesh.

With regard to OSP, I have never used it because I feel very uncomfortable with the warning that it may modify certain OS files. Has anyone had a bad experience after installing it?

Thank you
Jayram

i know at University of Washiington and UC San Diego they are using GID to generate the
soil mesh .. you might try contacting Pedro Arduino (just don't mention i sent you!)

and here are examples of the meshes they generated at washington:

I don't think GUI is that important as long as you have a good Post-processor.

I think what we really need is an easy way to generate meshes. I've been using FEAP for quite a while, and I think FEAP is much more productive in this respect.

While I prefer the TCL interface for my use of OpenSees, have you seen OpenSees Navigator??

vis tools...

Post by Boris »

We are actively working in this area, see:

http://sokocalo.engr.ucdavis.edu/~jeremic/VisResearch/

and in particular the link to Joey3D, it is standard C with OpenGL. It runs on both Linux and Windows (or any other machine with standard C and OpenGL...).

I would suggest keeping standard C (or C++) and using OpenGL for portability reasons.

Take a look at the source, we are now developing a somewhat larger set of tools but the framework is similar...

Let me know if anyone wants to collaborate on this.

Best regards, Boris

win32gui for opensees: We could help!!!

Post by StructEngVzla »

I am a Civil Engineer (20 years of experience) with a postdegree in finite element analysis now studying a phd on structural analysis. The brother of my wife need a thesis for geting his Computing Engineer Title. I was thinking he could work on a WIN32 Gui for Opensees. (and i will help as his industrial tutor) What all of you think about it?? how are the advances on this area??
Excelent work with opensees until now, i will try to help too!!!

You could also try nvStructural (GUI for OpenSees) from http://www.novelcae.com. It is free for students.
