Damping Parameter in Cantilever Column

Post by yalham »

Dear Silvia

I'm going to perform nonlinear dynamic analysis for a cantilever RC column.

For a unique column, first I used "mass" and the other time "stiffness" proportioned damping. Results are different in nonlinear analysis, (although there is no difference for linear analysis).

I've checked example manual and you had used stiffness proportioned using last committed stiffness.

Dose using of stiffness proportioned damping and also last committed stiffness relates to "hysteric damping" for a nonlinear model? or it is just a recommended modeling technic based on past calibrations?

thank you in advance
regards

To understand damping better I suggest you to read the basic theory of rayleigh damping (e.g., Prof. Chopra "Dynamics of Structures" book) and this paper: http://ascelibrary.org/sto/resource/1/j ... i4/p581_s1

Dear Vesna,
thanks for your reply. I've already read ch. 11 from the book by Prof. Chopra, and I will read the paper you have sent.
