Hi All,
An interactive GUI for OpenSees is now available from Novel CAE Solutions. It acts as both a pre-processor and post-processor. The product is called nvStructural (Novel Structural) and trial version is available for download at [url]http://www.novelcae.com[/url] . Student edition of the program will be available for free very soon.

Hi Mehmet,
First, OpenSees GUI looks very promising. Can you just clarify how Opensees GUI works? From your website you say it is a fully integrated analysis program using OpenSees as the analysis engine. Is it just externally linking to opensees.exe or do you use some code from opensees. It looks like a derivative work (maybe not if you just link to opensees.exe and your program doesn't use opensees code at all). The main point of the GPL is you can use the code all you want, but to distribute your derivative work you must extend to the users the same freedom provided to you by opensees authors (i.e. by providing the source code). Is the source code available? I didn't see in on your website.

By the way, the license of OpenSees isn't very clear. There is only a small note on the wiki that says it is GPL. Is it distributed under GPL v2, v3, v2 or later? These have different implication for linking and derivative work. Usually the source code should have a copy of the license included. It should be included in the .exe download too. Actually, if I'm not mistaken part of the terms of the GPL is that the user know the rights extended to them by providing them a copy of the license.

Thanks for your nice comment. OpenSees user interface (nvStructural) is using OpenSees externally without any modification to it and it is not using OpenSees source code. You can actually set nvStructural to use your own compiled version of OpenSees. It is not a derivative work and source code is not available for free.
