Drain 2DX or IDARC 2D or Opensees or Perform 3D?

Post by minafateh »

I am trying to do some iteration nonlinear dynamic and static analyses on Steel, Concrete with and without shear wall buildings considering SSI effect for my PhD. I need to write a batch file for iteration analysis with Matlab or Visual Basic, and link it to a software such as Drain 2DX, IDARC 2D, OPENSEES or … I also need to calculate Hysteretic Energy, Damage Index, Drift, and …

I will highly appreciate if anyone kindly answer to my question:

What software (Drain 2DX + NONLIN-PRO, IDARC 2D, OPENSEES, Perform 3D…) is more suitable for this type of research work?

As answering to this question is really vital for me, grateful if you kindly write my answer with a short explanation!

Thank you very much for your consideration in advance,

Fateh,
i am only familiar with OpenSees.
One of the many advantages of OpenSees (it has many of course) that would apply to you is the fact that OpenSees comes with a programmable language, Tcl, which allows you to run a large number of analyses on a large number of models (you may even use the Parallel-Processing Version).

also, where are you a student?

OpenseesNavigator

Post by minafateh »

Dear Dr. Silvia Mazzoni,

Thank you very much for your explanation. I am an Iranian PhD Student.
Could you please let me know:

1. Is not it necessary to learn Tcl programing language considering OpenseesNavigator software? Having OpenseesNavigator software, will we be needless of working wit TCL?

2. Can we write an iteration batch file and link Matlab with OpenseesNavigator?

Thank you very much again!
Best regards

i do not use Navigator as it is not programmable.

Tcl is an awesome and powerful scripting language.

Importsn questions about opensees capabality?

Post by minafateh »

Dear Silvia,

Could you please kindly answer to my questions regarding Opensees atleast even in short:

1.Can we see graphical profile of Drift ratios distribution in hight of structures by opensees or I have to use other softwares?

2. Has damage index like Park-Ang damage index model for RC Frame been calibrated in opensees?

3. TCL programing language is like C++ or it is quiet differnt from that?

4. For learing opensees, opensees.berkeley.edu/OpenSees/manuals/usermanual/index.html is adequate?

5. Is opensees is so powerful that have differn Hysteretic model for RC fram and etc.?

Thaks a lot in advance

Rgards

1. you can use the Tk version of OpenSees and plot the drift ratios. however, i'd recommend doing it in matlab, since it is much easier to use if you don't know tk.

2. i don't know much about that, you'd have to research.

3. Tcl is a higher-level scriping language.

4. to learn opensees i'd look at the examples manual and, if you can, attend the opensees days workshop in August.

5. depending on your modeling of elements and sections you can get different hysteretic responses, yes.

would you plaes tell me what gui is?

I saw Building TCL. Can we use it for graphical like matlab or is it different?

Iis possible to link opensees to matlab? It can be done by tcl or by matlab?

Thaks alot

gui = graphical user interface

i am currently working the the graphical pre-processor for buildingTcl

yes, you can link opensees to matlab, but i have never done it.
