BeamWithHinhes

Post by vallenato »

Hello.

Does anyone know if there is a limit value for Lp in the BeamWithHinges element? It seem to me that Lp should be < L/4 or L/8, for elements on sinhle or double curvature, respectively. Although this is not specifically mentioned in the paper.

Thanks,
L.

flexure-shear interaction displacement -based beam - column

Post by peacemaker »

hi to all !
would u plz help me for determination of hinge length for a steel section ?
and another question :
do u have any information about this new section elemnt :
flexure-shear interaction displacement -based beam - column element ?
if u have , plz give me an example for steel section .
tank u all .

the hinge length is your choice.

In theory, there are no restrictions on how large the plastic hinge lengths can be.

but i think the value of hinge length can chenge the result of the analysis .
is there any logical assumption for hinge length ?
if there isn't , how can i rely on my model ?!

my second question had no answer .

thank u silvia & m.scott .

1. you should stay within the element length. bad models will give you bad results.
2. this is an intersting research topic, you should read up on the literature.

For steel members 1-2 times the section depth is a reasonable assumption for the plastic hinge length.

There are empirical formulas to approximate the plastic hinge length of RC members. See articles written by Paulay and Priestley.

Dr. Scott, do you have any reference that points out more clearly the criteria to select the plastic hinge length for steel members?

Thank you!

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but you may want to search for articles from the following authors:
