shear area and shear factor

Post by baozaizhang »

Hello, I want to build a elastic beam-column with considering the shear effect. I saw there are two ways to do this:
1, use elastic Timoshenko beam, there is a shear area option. And the value for rectangular section is 5/6.
2, use forcebeamcolumn element with an elastic section. In the section, there is a shear shape factor.

Should I use 5/6 or 1.2 for this shear shape factor of the elastic section? I tried both and I think using 5/6 provided me the same answer as using Timoshenko beam. I just want to confirm this with some people who have been working on this.

Thank you very much
