overconsolidated soil

Post by mirkomorosi »

Dear all,
I'm trying to implement a 1D site effect soil model for cohesionless soils.
The question is how to implement an at rest stress initialization for overconsolidated soil column for 2D finite element simulation (quadUP element).
To this aim one way is to define initially a fictitious bulk modulus just during the gravity load appliation (either elastic and plastic stage), than update these magnitudes before the dynamic analysis.
This works apparently fine.
Trying to replicate same analysis without changing bulk modulus values doesn't seem possible. I've tried either applying horizontal loads or gravity acceleration (horizontal gravity acceleration component) able to impose the required horizontal stress but without getting the expected results.

Thus, I was wondering which is the way in opensees to initialize the soil? How to get during the gravity load application phase proper at rest stress condition, in case OCR soil needs to be modeled?

Best regards,
Mirko
