Re: lap splice modeling in concrete frame

I haven't modeled shear walls, but I based my column lap splice models on this one and good results:

Keep in mind this model is for relatively short splices near support and joint regions in poorly confined columns.

Rayleigh damping 1st-2nd vs 1-3rd mode (simple frame geomet)

I am running a 2-story, 2-bay RC frame in 2D nonlinear time-history with both GM records and sinusoidal acceleration excitation (with a relatively small amplitude). 1st and 2nd mode are horizontal (typical for a 2-story building), 3rd mode is vertical (beam deflections, symmetrical mode about center...

Re: FBE vs DBE

Vesna, you say neither FBE or DBE is best when softening behavior is expected. What would you suggest for this case?

Re: User-defined material SLOW analysis

Frank, turns out #2 was the issue. We built the release version and now the analysis runs at normal Opensees speed. Thanks for your help!

Re: User-defined material SLOW analysis

1) is not the problem, the .exe was built with the code. I need to check 2) I didn't write the code, a colleague did.
Thank you for the response, Frank.

User-defined material SLOW analysis

I am running nonlinear time history analysis with a model that includes a user-defined material, compiled in C++. Compared to the same model using only elements from the OpenSees library, the analysis is substantially slower. Is this typical? Any tips to improve this problem?

Re: ZeroLength Element Recorder

Yes, you're right. I checked again, and it is only time.

Vesna, or Frank, have you been able to look at this issue?

Re: ZeroLength Element Recorder

Yes, my output file is only one column. I did a cyclic pushover analysis and plotted this output against displacement at the node of interest. The curve seems to indicate that the output I'm getting is stress. My recorder command is shown below. However, I tried the same "recorder Element -file...

Re: ZeroLength Element Recorder

Let me clarify, I am getting a recorded output. Judging by the numbers recorded, it seems to be stress. But I can't record the strain (or anything else) along with the stress values. I need the strain values.

Hi, I have also had issues while using this element. Were you able to solve this? Please offer some tips if you did.

Re: Tips for Transient Analysis Convergence

Vesna, Thank you for the reply. I was able to solve this issue by using finer section meshing and tweaking damping parameters. I am now having a different issue after introducing the beamColumnJoint element in my model. I have posted a question about it on a separate post. If you read this reply fir...

beamcolumnjoint element and dynamic analysis

Has anyone successfully performed dynamic analysis of a reinforced concrete frame while using the beamcolumnjoint element (as shown in Lowes and Altoontash, 2003)? Without including this element, I successfully ran several dynamic analysis simulations of a concrete frame (2-story, 2-bay) using diffe...

Re: Tips for Transient Analysis Convergence

Update... after running some of these same GM records, but scaled to anywhere from 25% to 75% of the intensity, I can get some to converge. Is this an indication that my structure can't handle the forces from these accelerations even though the displacements are "small"? Or could it be som...

Tips for Transient Analysis Convergence

Hi all, Analyzing a 2-story, 2-bay RC frame. Pushover ran successfully to 5% drift (about 14 in displacement of 2nd story). However, I keep getting convergence issues for some Ground Motion records (4 so far). I've ran 4 ground motions successfully. I'm using nonlinear Force based beam-columns. I ha...
